Breath Of Life
Genesis 2:7-9 And the LORD God formed man
of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of
life; and man became a living soul. (8) And the LORD God planted a garden
eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. (9) And out
of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the
sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden,
and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. (KJV)
Looking back to your family tree, this
one, going all the way back to the tree of life, we see God had breathed
life in the first man Adam and he became a living soul. God gave this man
the ability to choose between the tree of life, or the one of knowledge of
good and evil which if partaken of would lead to separation with God. Well
we know that there was a fall and man died, so like with paramedics that
are sent, God sent His Son our way to see if He could breath some life back
into mankind again.
John 20:21-23 Then said Jesus to them
again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. (22)
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them,
Receive ye the Holy Ghost: (23) Whose soever sins ye remit, they are
remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. (KJV)
How about a little CPR so to speak, Spiritually?
Well, given the fact that the first man Adam had fallen for the lies of the
enemy, we see the second man Adam, that being the Lord Himself, breathing
some life back into His Church so that they could now partake of this new
life that was available through His sacrifice. Now keep in mind again, that
this is all taking place after His resurrection, the ministry that took
place after His death was showing the people a new way of life that would
soon be available to them so that they could resurrect also.
John 20:22
[He
breathed on them] It was customary for the prophets to use some significant
act to represent the nature of their message. See <Jer. 13; Jer. 18>,
etc. In this case the act of breathing was used to represent the nature of
the influence that would come upon them, and the source of that influence.
When man was created, God breathed into him the breath of life, <Gen.
2:7>. The word rendered "spirit" in the Scriptures denotes
wind, air, breath, as well as Spirit. Hence, the operations of the Holy
Spirit are compared to the wind, <John 3:8; Acts 2:2>. [Receive ye
the Holy Ghost] His breathing on them was a certain sign or pledge that
they would be endowed with the influences of the Holy Spirit. Compare
<Acts 1:4; John 2>. (from Barnes' Notes)
Acts 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost
was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. (2) And
suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it
filled all the house where they were sitting. (3) And there appeared unto
them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. (4) And
they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other
tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (KJV)
Hey, who left the window open? Well,
actually it was the windows of heaven being opened up and our God was
pouring His Spirit out on mankind. You remember how the people were
immersed in water before? Well, now they were being immersed in living
eternal waters that were now flowing out of them as well. The breath of
life was Spiritually being breathed into them so that they could operate as
a new creation in Christ.
Ephesians 4:14-15 That we henceforth be
no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of
doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie
in wait to deceive; (15) But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into
him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: (KJV)
Watch out though, the enemy is getting a
bit windy himself, and if something stinks it came from his end again. You
know, the Lord breathed life into the first man Adam; so the enemy came
along and literally took his breath away with his lies and cheap
imitations. The enemy would like to break some wind your way to, to get you
going in the opposite direction as well. But you, the Church, should know
and keep exercising your Spiritual senses so that you can discern between
what is of God and good, and what is evil.
John 10:10-11 The thief cometh not, but
for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have
life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (11) I am the good
shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. (KJV)
You know, the good shepherd not only came
to this earth but put up with a lot of abuse so that He could breathe some
life back into mankind. With all that He has done for us and continues to
do, have you taken the time today to hear His message? Do you have this
life and have it more abundantly, or are you on life support and letting
the enemy pull the plug?
