Manmade Titles
Matthew 23:5-8 But all their works they
do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge
the borders of their garments, (6) And love the uppermost rooms at feasts,
and the chief seats in the synagogues, (7) And greetings in the markets,
and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. (8) But be not ye called Rabbi: for
one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. (KJV)
Here is another one that I don’t
understand, how does mankind come up with all these titles that they give
one another, many times so that they can be seen of man. You know when
looking at the verses above, we see that our own Lord didn’t take on man’s
title to prove that He was of God, but rather knew that humility was what
our Lord was seeking.
Strong’s definition for ‘Rabbi’:
4461 rhabbi (hrab-bee'); of Hebrew origin
[7227 with pronominal suffix); my master, i.e Rabbi, as an official title
of honor: KJV-- Master, Rabbi.
An official title of honor, yeah but from
whom are you looking to get your honor from? Whether it’s Rabbi back then
or Reverend today what’s the difference I ask, except that these are titles
that man decided they needed to be labeled with? Heck, today again having
glanced at the paper I see where a guy was retiring from the ministry and
his title was the very reverend. Yikes, with a mindset like that, he
basically retired himself a long time ago.
Matthew 6:1-2 Take heed that ye do not
your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of
your Father which is in heaven. (2) Therefore when thou doest thine alms,
do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues
and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you,
They have their reward. (KJV)
Remember what the Word says about those
that think they need to impress man?
Philippians 2:5-8 Let this mind be in
you, which was also in Christ Jesus: (6) Who, being in the form of God,
thought it not robbery to be equal with God: (7) But made himself of no
reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the
likeness of men: (8) And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled
himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. (KJV)
Hey do you really think that our Lord if
He was to walk this earth again today would be out there looking for man’s
approval? In fact quite the opposite is true, He humbled Himself and took
on the form of one that would serve, not one that was looking to be served.
In fact verse 7 says that He made himself of no reputation. Does that sound
like someone who took on one of man’s titles in order to deliver the
message from above? Or just maybe the simple truth is that He let the Word
speak for itself, and that is what God confirmed.
Ephesians 4:11-12 And he gave some,
apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and
teachers; (12) For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the
ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: (KJV)
Here is the simple truth of how the Lord
would have His church operate, the one body of believers that know their
place in the Church and don’t need some manmade title to prove it.
