Endeavor So To Cultivate
2 Timothy 2:15 [Study to allow thyself
approved unto God] Endeavor so to cultivate and improve thy heart and mind,
that thou mayest be a reproach to him from whom thou professest to receive
thy commission. (from Adam Clarke Commentary)
Endeavor means to strive
for the attainment of some object. Strive means to labor hard or
earnestly; aim, struggle. Cultivate means to till (stir up); improve
by care, labor, or study.
When we think of the word ‘study’ what
comes to mind for many is when we were in school and we had to read books
and memorize or learn what was in them, and it wearied the flesh because
most of it did not pertain to life itself, true life.
Think about when you were a child, how do
you think you learned to walk, to communicate, to feed yourself, to know
the difference between good and bad, hot or cold? We learned these things
by listening, watching, and doing those things that we had heard and had
seen. The world was interesting to us as a child; it was an adventure in
how we learned and grew, there was something new and different each day. It
was through the experiences that we learned the most and gained
understanding. Not through books of man’s knowledge. Now do you know why
when you were born again of the Spirit that you were instructed to come to
Him as a child?
Many search the scriptures with the same
structure that they were taught in school instead of allowing the Holy Spirit
to lead and guide them. The letter killeth, it is the Spirit that gives
life and meaning to the scriptures. It is the leading and guiding of the
Spirit in the experiences of life that bring the scriptures to life within
us. The true life is within us, not in books or in man’s wisdom which many
teach and which many follow after. True life and study is in Christ, and in
Him we are approved unto God.
So let us study so to cultivate and
improve our heart and mind before God in sincerity and in truth this day by
letting the Spirit lead and guide. Experience the Word of God; let it be a
new adventure, new each day, and let it bring forth understanding,
knowledge, and the wisdom from above within you. For in this you will not
be wearied, but you will be strengthened and encouraged in growing up in to
Christ in all things.
